cWOW Gallery, also known as City Without Walls Gallery, was an art gallery in Newark, New Jersey. It was located on Halsey Street near Crawford Street. This area is part of the Lincoln Park/The Coast Cultural District.
City Without Walls was New Jersey's oldest not-for-profit art space. "Not-for-profit" means it was a group that used its money to help its cause, not to make a profit for owners. It operated continuously from 1975 until 2018.
What Was cWOW Gallery?
The gallery had two main goals. First, it helped new and rising artists grow their careers. Second, it gave the public a chance to see and enjoy interesting modern art. This type of art is called contemporary art.
The gallery was known as an "alternative art space." This means it showed art that might be different from what you'd see in bigger, more traditional museums.
Exhibitions and Programs
Members of the gallery helped to choose and organize the art shows. This is called "curating." cWOW held about 6 to 10 art shows each year. These shows took place both at the gallery and in other locations.
cWOW also ran three special programs to teach people about art:
- City Murals
- Newark New Media
- ArtReach
The gallery also had a space inside the atrium of One Newark Center. An atrium is a large, open space, often with a glass roof. Both of cWOW's locations were part of the city's "Open Doors Studio Tour." This tour allowed people to visit many art studios and galleries in Newark.
When Did cWOW Gallery Close?
The cWOW gallery closed its doors in 2018. It had been open for 43 years, sharing art and supporting artists in Newark.
