The most well-known product from Callard and Bowser is its traditional mints, called Altoids. These mints come in classic flavors like peppermint, wintergreen, cinnamon, and spearmint. You can easily spot them because they are packed in a special rectangular tin box.

A Sweet History: From Toffee to Mints

Callard and Bowser used to sell a very popular line of English toffees. However, these delicious toffees were stopped being made between 2001 and 2003.

The company was started a long, long time ago in 1779. Two brothers from Scotland, Richard Callard and John Bowser, founded it in a place called Maryhill, Glasgow. This was during a time known as the Scottish Enlightenment, a period when many new ideas and inventions were happening!

Who Owned Callard and Bowser?

Over the years, Callard and Bowser has been owned by several different companies.

  • From 1953 to 1982, it was owned by Arthur Guinness & Sons.
  • Then, in 1982, an American company called Beatrice Foods bought it.
  • In 1988, United Biscuits purchased the company.
  • Next, in 1993, Kraft Foods took over.
  • Finally, in 2004, the Wrigley Company bought Callard and Bowser, and it has been part of Wrigley ever since.
