Carlos Martínez Shaw (born in 1945) is a Spanish historian. He is a very respected professor who taught about Early Modern History at the National University of Distance Education (UNED). He is also a member of the Royal Academy of History, which is a very important group of historians in Spain.
Life and Education
Carlos Martínez Shaw was born in Seville, Spain, on June 28, 1945. He studied History at the University of Seville. In 1967, he earned his first degree in History.
Later, he moved to the University of Barcelona. There, he started working on a big research project. This project was about the trade between Spain and its colonies. He also began writing his PhD thesis, which is a very long research paper.
He finished his PhD in 1973. His thesis was about "Catalonia in the Indies Trade (1680-1756)." This showed his deep knowledge of history.
Teaching Career
Carlos Martínez Shaw has been a full professor at several universities. From 1984 to 1986, he taught at the University of Santander/Cantabria.
Then, from 1986 to 1994, he was a professor at the University of Barcelona. After that, he joined the National University of Distance Education (UNED) in 1994. He taught there until 2015, when he became a professor emeritus. This means he retired but is still highly respected.
Royal Academy of History
In November 2007, Carlos Martínez Shaw became a full member of the Royal Academy of History (RAH). This is a very important honor for historians in Spain.
He gave a special speech when he joined. The speech was titled "The Spanish Commercial System of the Pacific (1765–1820)." This shows his expertise in the history of trade and exploration.
