A post office was opened in Castle Rock in 1910. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail, connecting them to the outside world. The post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1972.

Today, Castle Rock is centered around a farm. It is located right on South Dakota Highway 79. You can find it about 17 miles north of the town of Newell.
