History of the Children's Museum in Easton

How the Museum Started

The idea for the Children's Museum in Easton began in 1986. Four moms from Easton, who had young children, wanted more hands-on learning experiences for their kids. They decided to create a museum where children could explore and learn by doing.

Finding a Home for the Museum

At that time, a historic firehouse built in 1904 was available. It hadn't been used as a fire station for many years. The town of Easton was planning to sell it. The four mothers saw this as a perfect opportunity. They suggested to the town that the firehouse become a children's museum.

The town officials, called selectmen, voted on the idea. The vote passed, which was great news for the museum! As part of the agreement, the museum promised to give $100,000 from its admission profits back to the town.

Opening the Doors to Learning

The mothers didn't have big company sponsors to help them. So, they spent five years raising money through community events. People in the community supported their vision, and finally, they gathered enough funds. The Children's Museum in Easton officially opened its doors in 1991. Since then, it has been a wonderful place for kids to learn and play.
