Richweed, also known as Collinsonia canadensis, is a plant that comes back every year. It's a type of herb and belongs to the mint family, which scientists call Lamiaceae.

This plant grows naturally in eastern North America. You can find it mostly east of the Mississippi River, where it is very common. Richweed is the most widespread plant in its group, growing as far north as Quebec in Canada and as far south as Florida in the United States. It likes to grow in forests that have rich soil and are a bit damp, often in rocky areas with lime in the ground.

Richweed plants produce flowers in the middle of summer. These flowers have a nice lemon scent. This is a special time for the plant because not many other flowers bloom in deeply shaded forests during mid-summer.

Traditional Uses of Richweed

For a long time, Native Americans used Collinsonia canadensis as a traditional medicine. They used it to help with many different health problems.

When European-American settlers first arrived in North America, they didn't use this plant much. This was because it didn't seem to have any obvious harmful effects. However, in the mid-1800s, richweed became popular again as a plant used for medicine.

People could make a tea from the leaves of the richweed plant. The part of the stem that grows underground was also used. It was once thought to help the body get rid of extra water, act as a general health booster, and help tighten body tissues.
