The Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur (CTI) is a French organization. Its name in English means "Accreditation authority for French professional engineers". You can call it "CTI" for short.
CTI's main job is to check and approve schools that train engineers in France. It makes sure these schools offer good quality education. CTI also controls who can get the "Diplôme d'ingénieur" (Engineer's Diploma). This diploma lets people use the special title of "Ingénieur Diplomé" (qualified graduate engineer).
This organization was created by a law on July 10, 1934. Even though it's part of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, CTI works independently. It's the official group in France that checks and approves schools to give out the engineering degree.
CTI is also part of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. It is listed in EQAR, which is a European register for quality in education. This means CTI's work is recognized across Europe.

What CTI Does
CTI has several important jobs that have changed over time. Here are its main tasks:
- It regularly checks all engineering programs in French schools. This leads to the schools being approved to give out engineering degrees.
- CTI approves engineering graduate schools, often called "Grande écoles" in France. It makes decisions for private schools and gives advice to the government for public schools. This advice is always followed.
- It creates the rules and steps for approving engineering programs. This helps make sure engineering training keeps getting better. It also helps training match what businesses and society need.
- CTI checks engineering courses from schools in other countries. This helps their diplomas and titles be recognized in France.
- It also checks engineering courses (both French and foreign) to give them special quality labels. CTI helped start the ENAEE. It can give out the EUR-ACE label. This is a European quality mark for engineering education.
How CTI Works
How CTI is Set Up
CTI is an independent part of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It gets money from the government and from the schools it approves. The ministry also helps CTI with its daily operations.
How Schools Get Approved
CTI follows strict rules for checking schools. These rules are based on standards for quality in European higher education. They also follow best practices for engineering approval from international groups.
The process for a school to get approved includes these steps:
- The school writes a report about itself. This report shows how the school meets CTI's standards.
- A team of experts visits the school. A CTI member leads this team. The experts write a report about their visit.
- CTI then holds a meeting. Based on the expert report, CTI decides if the school gets approved. Approval can be for up to five years. If a school needs to make improvements, it might get approved for a shorter time.
- CTI sends its decision to the ministry in charge of higher education.
- Schools can appeal if they disagree with CTI's decision.
What Degrees CTI Approves
In many countries, engineering degrees are offered at two levels: Bachelor and Master. In France, CTI has always approved engineering degrees at the Master's level.
Starting in 2020, CTI will also check Bachelor's courses for engineers. This includes programs that combine skills, like engineering and management.
Every year, CTI publishes a list of French and foreign schools. These are the schools allowed to give out the "Ingénieur diplômé" diploma. This list is published in the French Journal Officiel.
CTI also updates a public database each year called "CTI certified data." This helps people find reliable information about engineering training.
