The Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society (CNHSS) is a special group in Croydon, south London. It helps people learn about the local history, archaeology, natural history, and geology of the London Borough of Croydon and nearby areas. This society started a long time ago, in 1870. It is also a registered charity, which means it works for the public good.

Discovering the History of CNHSS

The society began in 1870 as the Croydon Microscopical Club. Back then, people were very interested in looking at tiny things through microscopes. In 1877, the group changed its name to the Croydon Microscopical and Natural History Club. This showed they were also studying nature. Finally, in 1902, they became the Croydon Natural History & Scientific Society, which is their name today. The society officially became a company in 1967 and a charity in 1970.

Where to Find the CNHSS

The CNHSS Emblem

The society has a unique emblem, or symbol. It shows a design from a very old bronze disc. This disc is from the 5th or 6th century, which is over 1400 years ago! It has a triskelion design, which means it has three spirals or legs. People think it might have been a belt decoration or a good luck charm. This ancient object was found in 1893 in an Anglo-Saxon cemetery in Edridge Road, Croydon. You can see the original disc in the Riesco Gallery at the Museum of Croydon.
