The Story of Death's Messengers
This fairy tale tells a unique story about Death as a character. It begins with an unexpected meeting.
A Surprising Encounter
One day, Death, who is often shown as a powerful figure, had a very bad encounter. He met a giant and was badly beaten. Death was left weak and unable to move. Soon after, a kind young man came along. He saw Death lying there and felt sorry for him. The young man helped Death to stand up and recover.
The Promise of Warning
Death was very grateful for the young man's help. He told the young man that he could not stop the natural course of life. However, Death promised that when the young man's time came, he would send special messengers. These messengers would arrive beforehand to warn the young man of his approaching end. This way, the young man would not be surprised.
The Messengers Arrive
Many years passed, and the young man grew old. He had forgotten about the promise Death made long ago. One day, Death appeared before him, ready to take him away. The man was very surprised and complained. He reminded Death of the promise to send warnings. He felt that Death had not kept his word.
What Were the Messengers?
Death then explained that he had sent messengers, but the man had not recognized them. Death pointed out that the messengers were:
- Illness: The sicknesses and aches that come with age.
- Aging: The visible signs of getting older, like wrinkles or gray hair.
- Sleep: The need for more rest and the way sleep can sometimes feel like a brief pause from life.
Once Death explained this, the man understood. He realized that these everyday experiences were indeed the warnings he had been promised. With this new understanding, the man accepted his fate without further complaint.
