Dela (pronounced "Deh-LAH") was an important leader known as a count in the old region of Empúries. He died around the year 894. Dela became the Count of Empúries in 862, taking over from his father, Sunyer I of Empúries. He shared this important role with his brother, Sunyer II of Empúries.

Who Was Dela?

Dela was a count, which was like a powerful ruler or governor in a specific area during the Middle Ages. He helped manage and protect the land of Empúries, which is now part of Catalonia, Spain. He ruled alongside his brother, Sunyer II, starting in 862.

A Challenge for Girona

Dela and his brother, Sunyer II, wanted to expand their territory. They tried to take control of a nearby area called the County of Girona. However, their plans were stopped by a powerful relative named Wilfred the Hairy. Wilfred was a very important count himself, and he prevented Dela and Sunyer from taking over Girona.

Dela's Family Life

Dela was married to a woman named Sixilona. She was the daughter of Sunifred I, Count of Barcelona, another significant count of that time. Dela and Sixilona had two children:

  • Ramló (died 960): He became an abbot at a place called Saint John of Ripoll. An abbot is a leader of a monastery, a bit like a principal of a special religious school.
  • Virgilia (died 957)
