Desmodium glabellum (Michaux) A.P. de Candolle

Desmodium glabellum is a type of wild plant known as Dillenius' ticktrefoil or tall tick-trefoil. It is a perennial herb, which means it lives for more than two years. This plant belongs to the pea family. You can find it growing naturally in the eastern and central parts of North America. It often grows in open fields, along the edges of woodlands, and in areas where the ground has been disturbed.
What Does Desmodium Glabellum Look Like?
Desmodium glabellum can grow quite tall, reaching up to 5 feet (about 1.5 meters) high. It has leaves that grow in an alternating pattern along its stem. Each leaf is made up of three smaller leaflets, arranged a bit like the fingers on a hand. This is called "palmately trifoliate."
Flowers and Seeds
The plant produces pretty flowers that are light pink to purplish in color. You can usually see these flowers blooming from June through September.
After the flowers, the plant develops seeds inside special pods. These pods are a bit sticky and are arranged in a row. Each pod can have between 2 and 5 segments, which are like small sections. The seeds typically appear from August to October.
Similar Plants
Desmodium glabellum looks very much like another plant called Desmodium perplexum. For a long time, scientists thought they were the same plant. However, they were recently identified as two separate species because of small differences between them.
