Diego Fernández de la Cueva was an important Spanish nobleman who lived in the 1400s. He was known for being a successful businessman and a trusted helper to King Henry IV of Castile. He was given the special title of the 1st Viscount of Huelma. He passed away on November 26, 1473.
His Life and Work
Diego Fernández de la Cueva was born in a city called Úbeda, located in a region of Spain known as Andalusia. This was in the old Crown of Castille.
He was a very skilled merchant, which means he bought and sold goods. He was also a banker, handling money for important people. Because he was so good at this, he became the personal banker for King Henry IV of Castile.
The King trusted Diego very much. As a reward for his loyalty and help, King Henry IV gave him the special title of the 1st Viscount of Huelma. A Viscount was a nobleman who held land and power, similar to a count but usually a step below.
Diego Fernández de la Cueva married a woman named Maior Alfonso de Mercado, who was also from Úbeda. They had two sons together.
King Henry IV visited Úbeda during his second year as king. He stayed at Diego's house. When the King left, he wanted to show his thanks to Diego. He asked if Diego's oldest son could come to live at the royal court. Diego wanted to keep his oldest son close, so he offered his second son, Beltrán de la Cueva, instead. King Henry IV agreed, and Beltrán went to live and serve at the royal court. Beltrán later became a very important person in the King's court himself.
