Diego Ortiz de Zúñiga (born in Seville, Spain, 1636 – died September 3, 1680) was an important Spanish historian, writer, and nobleman. He is best known for his book Annales eclesiásticos y seculares de la ciudad de Sevilla. This book tells the history of Seville from 1246 to 1671.
Diego Ortiz de Zúñiga was born in Seville in 1636. He passed away in the same city on September 3, 1680. He was a respected historian and a Knight of the Order of Santiago. He also served as a "Venticuatro" of Seville for some years. This was a position in the city government.

His Family Background
Diego's father was Juan Ortiz de Zúñiga y Avellaneda. He was a Knight of the Order of Calatrava. He also served as an Infantry Captain. His mother was Leanor Luisa del Alcázar y Zúñiga, who was his father's cousin.
In 1657, Diego married Ana María Caballero de Cabrera. Her father, Diego Caballero de Cabrera, was also a "Venticuatro" of Seville. He was also a Knight of the Order of Santiago.
Diego's first son was Juan Ortiz de Zúñiga. Juan later married Urraca Fernández de Santillán y Villegas in 1675. In 1705, Juan was given the title of the First Marquis of Montefuerte. This was a special honor from the king.
The Ortiz de Zúñiga family of Seville had a long history. One of their ancestors was Alonso Ortiz (1420-1479). He was a Commander in the Order of Santiago. Another ancestor, Pedro Ortiz, helped conquer Seville in 1248.
