Diego Pérez de Valdivia (born between 1520 and 1524 – died February 28, 1589) was a Spanish writer and teacher. He was a student of John of Ávila, a famous religious leader. Diego Pérez de Valdivia wrote about how ordinary people could live a spiritual life.
His Life and Studies
Diego Pérez de Valdivia was born in a town called Baeza in Spain. His teacher, John of Ávila, sent him to study at the important University of Salamanca.
After his studies, he taught philosophy for three years at the University of Granada. From 1549 to 1577, he became a professor of Holy Scripture at the University of Baeza. This meant he taught about religious texts.
He also served as an archdeacon in Jaén from 1569 to 1574. An archdeacon is a senior church official. From 1574 to 1577, he faced some investigations by religious authorities. This was because of suspicions about his beliefs, which were seen as different from the main church teachings at the time.
Later, from 1578 until his death in 1589, he was a Professor of Scripture at the University of Barcelona. He passed away on February 28, 1589.
His Writings
Diego Pérez de Valdivia wrote several important books. These books helped people understand and practice their faith. Here are some of his well-known works:
- Camino y puerta para la oración mental (Pathway and Guide for Private Prayer), published in 1580. This book helped people learn how to pray on their own.
