Diplôme d'études universitaires générales facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A Diplôme d'études universitaires générales (DEUG) was a special French university certificate. Students earned it after finishing two years of study at a university in France. It was first created in 1973.

What Was the DEUG?

The DEUG, which stands for "Diplôme d'études universitaires générales," was like a first step in French higher education. It showed that a student had successfully completed the first two years of their university studies. This certificate was a way to recognize their hard work and knowledge gained during those initial years.

Why Was It Important?

Getting a DEUG meant a student could continue their studies towards a longer degree, like a "licence" (which is similar to a bachelor's degree). It also allowed some students to stop their studies after two years and still have an official qualification. This was helpful for finding certain jobs or for showing their academic achievement.

When Was the DEUG Used?

The DEUG was a common part of the French university system for many years after it was created in 1973. It was a key part of how students moved through their degrees. However, the French education system changed over time.

Changes in French University Degrees

Around the early 2000s, France updated its university degrees to match a system used in many other European countries. This new system is often called the LMD system:

  • L for Licence (3 years of study, like a bachelor's degree)
  • M for Master (2 more years after the Licence)
  • D for Doctorat (3 or more years after the Master)

Because of these changes, the DEUG was eventually replaced. Students now typically aim directly for the Licence degree, which covers the first three years of university.

Why Learn About the DEUG Now?

Even though the DEUG is no longer given out, it's still an important part of French education history. Learning about it helps us understand how university systems can change and adapt over time. It also shows how different countries organize their higher education.
