Dušan Čkrebić (pronounced Doo-shan Chkreh-bich) was an important Serbian politician. He was born on August 7, 1927, and passed away on April 7, 2022. During his career, he held several big leadership roles in the Socialist Republic of Serbia. These included being the Prime Minister, the President of the Assembly, and the President.
Early Life and Career
Dušan Čkrebić was born in Niš, a city in Serbia, on August 7, 1927. When he was young, he fought in World War II as part of the Yugoslav Partisans. These were groups who resisted during the war.
After the war, in 1947, he went to study how airplanes work in the Soviet Union. Later, in 1958, he became the general manager of a soda factory. This shows he had a background in both engineering and management.
Political Journey
Čkrebić then started his political career. From 1974 to 1978, he served as the Prime Minister of Serbia. This role meant he was in charge of the government's daily work.
After that, he became the President of the Assembly from 1978 to 1982. The Assembly was like the parliament, where laws were made.
In 1982, he joined an important group called the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia. This group was key in the country's politics.
Later Years and Retirement
In 1988, there were some big changes in politics. Dušan Čkrebić was the only member of the Central Committee to lose a special vote. After this, he decided to step down from the Committee.
He then retired from politics completely in 1990. Dušan Čkrebić passed away on April 7, 2022, in Belgrade, Serbia.
