History of the Eagle Theater

From Hotel to Movie House

The story of the Eagle Theater site began in the 1860s. A hotel called the Cooper House Hotel was first built there. Over the years, the hotel had many different owners.

By 1910, the building was changed into something new. It became Pontiac's very first movie theater! This new movie house was named the Eagle Theater.

A New Building for Entertainment

In 1927, a brand new building was constructed right where the old Eagle Theater stood. This new building was designed to be a grand theater. After it was finished, a company called W.S. Butterfield Theatres rented it. They operated many movie theaters.

In the 2000s, the theater was updated again. It was changed to become a nightclub. As of 2018, it was known as Elektricity.

Design and Features of the Theater

Outside Appearance

The Eagle Theater is a three-story building. Its front, or facade, is made of stone and covered with stucco and red tiles. On each side of the front, there are tall towers. These towers have red tiles at the bottom.

The second floor of the towers has special "Moorish" or "horseshoe" shaped windows. At the very top of the towers, there is a decorative ledge. Each section of the building's front also has a fancy roof made of clay tiles.

Inside the Theater

The inside of the theater also has many "Moorish" design elements. These include special arches shaped like a keyhole or a horseshoe. You can see these arches between the columns along the sides of the theater.

On the second floor, there is a large room. In the past, performers and the audience would meet here after shows. The third floor has nine apartments. These apartments were originally made for traveling performers who came to act in vaudeville shows. The apartments even have cool Art Deco style bathrooms and small "Pullman" kitchens.
