What is Eid?
Eid marks a time of happiness and thankfulness for Muslims. There are two main Eids that are celebrated globally, plus another important day that many Muslims observe. These holidays are based on the Islamic calendar, which follows the moon, so their dates change each year compared to the regular calendar you might use.
Eid al-Fitr: The Festival of Breaking the Fast
Eid al-Fitr means "Feast of Breaking the Fast." This joyful holiday marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month when Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. After a month of fasting and spiritual reflection, Eid al-Fitr is a time to celebrate completing this important act of worship.
On this day, Muslims usually:
- Wake up early and perform a special prayer called Salat al-Eid.
- Wear new or their best clothes.
- Visit family and friends, sharing meals and gifts.
- Give money or food to those in need, known as Zakat al-Fitr, to make sure everyone can celebrate.
Eid al-Adha: The Festival of Sacrifice
Eid al-Adha means "Feast of the Sacrifice." This Eid is celebrated about two months after Eid al-Fitr. It honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. God provided a ram instead.
This holiday is also a time for:

- Spending time with loved ones.

Eid Milad un Nabi: Celebrating the Prophet's Birthday
Eid Milad un Nabi, often just called Mawlid, celebrates the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. This day is observed by many Muslims around the world. It's a time to remember his life, teachings, and the good example he set.
On this day, people might:
- Attend special gatherings where stories about Prophet Muhammad's life are shared.
- Recite poems and songs praising him.
- Give charity and help others.
- Some places have parades or decorate their homes and mosques.
