El Rosario is a town and a municipality in El Salvador. It is located in the La Paz department. A department is like a state or province.

The History of El Rosario

The story of El Rosario began a long time ago. It was once a large farm called "Hacienda El Rosario." This farm belonged to a woman named Doña Margarita Carballo. The people who lived there were mostly farmers. They worked in a rural, agricultural area.

In 1770, a Spanish Archbishop named Monsignor Pedro Larras Cortez visited this farm. He was based in Guatemala and traveled to different places.

El Rosario used to be part of the San Salvador department. But on February 21, 1852, a new department was created. It was called La Paz. The town of Zacatecoluca became the main city of this new department. El Rosario then became part of the La Paz department. It was also part of the Olocuilta district.

Becoming a City

El Rosario officially became a city on November 18, 1998. This happened because of a special law called Legislative Decree No 486. Julio Arevalo Diego Bonilla was in charge of the local government at that time.

The president of El Salvador, Dr. Armando Calderon Sol, gave El Rosario the title of "City." This was done in a special public event. The ceremony took place in the town's Central Park on December 19, 1998.
