Ellington Township was officially created a long time ago, in the year 1855. This means it has been a recognized community for over 160 years!

Within Ellington Township, there are a couple of smaller areas that people call "communities." These are places where groups of homes and businesses are located.
- Ellington is one of these communities. It's not a separate town with its own government, but it's a recognized place within the township. You can find it where Dutcher Road and M-81/E Caro Road meet. There used to be a post office here many years ago, from 1862 to 1905.
- Elmwood is another community. It sits right on the edge of Ellington Township, sharing a border with Elmwood Township. It's located near Elmwood Road and M-81/E Caro Road.
