Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elvira Fernández de Córdoba y Manrique de Figueroa (born around 1500 – died 1524) was an important Spanish noblewoman. She was the only surviving daughter of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, a famous Spanish general. Her father was also the Viceroy of Naples (a ruler representing the king) from 1503 to 1507. Her mother was Maria Manrique de Lara y Espinoza.

In 1518, Elvira married her cousin, Luis Fernández de Córdoba. Elvira passed away at a young age in 1524. Her husband also died shortly after, in 1526, while on a military campaign in Italy.

Elvira was very important for the history of noble families in Spain. She inherited the special titles of Duke and Duchess that her father had received from the Catholic Monarchs (King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I).

Elvira and Luis had four children:

  • Gonzalo (born 1520 – died 1578)
  • Francisca (died 1597)
  • Beatriz
  • María

Her noble titles first went to her son Gonzalo. After Gonzalo, the titles passed to her daughter Francisca. Later, the titles went to Antonio Fernández de Córdoba y Cardona (born 1550 – died 1606), who was the son of her daughter Beatriz.
