Empress Thượng Dương: A Royal Regent
Early Life and Empress Role
Thượng Dương was the empress of Lý Thánh Tông, a powerful emperor. Her family name was Dương. As empress, she held a very important position in the royal court.
Becoming a Regent
When Emperor Lý Thánh Tông passed away in 1072, his son, Lý Nhân Tông, was only seven years old. Because the new emperor was so young, he needed help to rule the country. Empress Thượng Dương, along with a wise official named Lý Đạo Thành (who was a chancellor), were chosen to be regents. This meant they would guide the country until Lý Nhân Tông was old enough to rule on his own. Lý Nhân Tông's mother was the second queen, Ỷ Lan.
End of Her Regency
Empress Thượng Dương's time as regent was short. The next year, in 1073, she and her servants passed away. Lý Đạo Thành, the chancellor who was also a regent, was temporarily sent away from the capital city to work in the provinces.
