Esteban Márquez de Velasco (1652–1696) was a Spanish painter from the Baroque period. The Baroque style was popular in art during the 1600s and featured lots of drama, rich colors, and strong emotions.

Biography

Esteban Márquez de Velasco was born in a town called Puebla de Guzmán, which is in Huelva, Spain. When he was young, he moved to Seville with his uncle, Fernando Márquez. His uncle was also a painter, and Esteban worked with him until 1672.

Esteban Márquez de Velasco's art shows that he was greatly influenced by the famous artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Murillo was very popular at that time. It is likely that Esteban worked in one of Murillo's busy art studios, where many paintings were created.

Important Paintings

It can be tricky to know exactly which paintings are by Esteban Márquez de Velasco, because not many of his works are signed or dated. However, some of his known paintings include:

  • Lactation of Saint Dominic: This painting is from 1693 and can be found in the Santa Maria de las Nieves church.
  • Christ and the Virgin as protectors of the youth: This large oil painting from 1694 was originally in the College of San Telmo in Seville. It is now kept in the auditorium of the University of Seville.
