Estefania Carròs i de Mur facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Estefania Carròs i de Mur (born 1455 – died March 16, 1511) was an important Spanish educator. She was known for starting a special school for girls during a time when it was very unusual.

Her Early Life

Estefania was born in 1455. Her parents were Brianda de Mur and Nicolau Carròs i d’Arborea. Her father was a powerful person who served as the viceroy of Sardinia from 1461 to 1478. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the representative of a king or queen.

When her parents moved to Sardinia, Estefania stayed in Spain. She was cared for by her aunt, Isabel de Mur. Her aunt was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Juana Enriquez. This meant her aunt helped the queen and was also a governess to Princess Joanna. A governess is a private teacher who teaches children in their home.

A New Kind of School

In Estefania's time, noblewomen usually had only two main choices for their lives. They could either get married or become a nun in a convent. But Estefania Carròs did not want to do either of these things.

Instead, she decided to do something different. She moved into a house her father owned in Barcelona, Spain. There, she opened a special school for girls. This school was for girls from noble families and also for girls from the burgher class. Burghers were people who lived in towns and cities and were often merchants or skilled workers.

Her school was not a convent school, which was the usual type of school for girls back then. This made her school very unique for its time. One of her students was Juana de Aragón, who was the daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon, a famous king.

Estefania Carròs was clearly respected for her school. She had many women who worked with her and supported her important work.
