The Eyre's Tunnel or Lisson Grove Tunnel is a short tunnel for boats. It is part of the Regent's Canal in north London. This tunnel goes under a road called Lisson Grove in an area known as St John's Wood.
It first opened in 1816. The tunnel is only 48 metres (about 157 feet) long.
What is the Lisson Grove Tunnel?
The Lisson Grove Tunnel is one of three tunnels on the Regent's Canal. The other two are the Islington Tunnel and the Maida Hill Tunnel. Unlike those other tunnels, Eyre's Tunnel has a special path next to it. This path is called a towpath. It is now fenced off for safety.
Why Does it Have Two Names?
This tunnel used to be known only as Eyre's Tunnel. It got this name because it passed under land owned by a person named Richard Eyre. He was a local landowner.
Later, the road above the tunnel was named Lisson Grove. Because of this, people started calling the tunnel Lisson Grove Tunnel too. So, it has two names that are both correct!
