Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is a documentary film from 2010. It tells the story of an Australian man named Joe Cross. He travels across the United States for 60 days. During this time, he follows a special juice diet. His goal is to improve his health. He gets help from Joel Fuhrman, a doctor who studies nutrition.
About the Film's Journey
The movie shows Joe Cross at the beginning of his journey. He was feeling very sad and weighed about 310 pounds (140 kg). He also had a serious health problem where his body attacked itself. He was taking strong medicines for it.
Joe decided to try a juice fast. This means he would only drink juices made from fruits and vegetables. He wanted to see if this could help him get healthier.
After his juice fast, Joe said he lost 100 pounds (45 kg). He also stopped needing his medicines. He then started eating a plant-based diet, which means mostly fruits, vegetables, and grains.
Inspiring Others
During his trip, Joe met a truck driver named Phil Staples. Phil was also very overweight. They met at a truck stop in Arizona. Joe's story inspired Phil to try juice fasting too.
A second movie, called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead 2, came out in 2014. It continued Joe's story.
Awards and Recognition
Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead won two awards in 2010. It received the Turning Point Award. It also shared the Audience Choice Award for Documentary Film. Both awards were given at the Sonoma International Film Festival.
