Felipe Beltrán Serrano (1704–1783) was an important Spanish church leader. He served as the Bishop of Salamanca from 1763 to 1783. He was also the Grand Inquisitor of Spain from 1775 until he passed away in 1783.

Biography

Felipe Beltrán Serrano was born on October 20, 1704, in a town called La Serra d'en Galceran. His parents were not wealthy. When he was 17, in 1721, he got help from a kind person named Ginés Rabaza Perellós. This help allowed him to enroll at the University of Valencia.

In 1724, Felipe began studying Christian theology at the university. He worked hard and earned a master's degree after three years. From 1728 to 1735, he taught a type of philosophy called Thomistic philosophy. In 1735, he became a professor of this subject. He held this teaching position until 1738, when the special teaching role was ended.

In 1739, with more help from Ginés Rabaza Perellós, Felipe became a parish priest in Bétera. A parish priest is a leader of a local church. In 1752, he moved to become the parish priest of Massamagrell. Then, in 1759, he became a canon at Valencia Cathedral. A canon is a type of priest who is part of a special group connected to a cathedral.

On July 18, 1763, Felipe was chosen to be the Bishop of Salamanca. He officially became a bishop on September 25, 1763. As bishop, he supported the decision to remove the Jesuits from Spain in 1767. The Jesuits were a religious group.

Felipe Beltrán Serrano was appointed Grand Inquisitor of Spain on December 24, 1774. The Grand Inquisitor was a very powerful church official. Their job was to make sure people followed the rules of the Catholic Church. As Grand Inquisitor, he continued to stop a religious movement called Jansenism in Spain. He also oversaw a trial for a person named Pablo de Olavide in 1775. Felipe helped a writer named Pedro Estala. Another writer, José Francisco de Isla, wrote funny stories about Beltrán. In 1780, Felipe received a special honor called the Order of Charles III.

He passed away in Madrid on December 1, 1783.
