Fidel Cano Gutiérrez (born in San Pedro, Antioquia, in 1854 and died in Medellín in 1919) was a very important Colombian journalist. He is famous for starting El Espectador, which is Colombia's oldest newspaper. He believed strongly in telling the truth and sharing information with people.

Early Life and Education

Fidel Cano Gutiérrez was born on April 17, 1854. He grew up in the Antioquia region of Colombia. He went to high school at Colegio de Jesús in Medellín. Later, he studied at the Colegio del Estado. This school later became the University of Antioquia.

Starting a Newspaper

Fidel Cano started his career in writing early. In 1872, he worked at La Palestra, a newspaper about literature. Five years later, he became the editor of another paper called La Idea.

In 1879, he moved to the city of Medellín. On March 22, 1887, he started his own newspaper. He named it El Espectador. This newspaper became very important in Colombia.

Facing Challenges

El Espectador often shared ideas that the government did not like. The government at the time was led by the Colombian Conservative Party. They thought the newspaper was "subversive," meaning it was trying to cause trouble.

Because of this, El Espectador had to stop printing six times. Fidel Cano, as the editor, was also put in jail many times. But he kept working to publish his newspaper. He wanted people to have access to different ideas.

Other Important Roles

Besides his work with El Espectador, Fidel Cano had other important jobs. He was the director of the Official Printing Office. This office printed government documents.

He was also a member and president of the Academia Antioqueña de Historia. This group studied the history of Antioquia. Cano also served as a deputy in the Antioquia Department Assembly. He was even a Senator for Colombia. He also worked as the principal of the Colegio Central of the University of Antioquia.
