This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 24, 1982, which means it's an important historical site.
History of the First National Bank Building
The First National Bank started way back in 1863. It was the very first bank in Washtenaw County. The bank hired the Ann Arbor company Fry and Kasurin to design this building. Construction began in 1927.
The building was finished in 1930. At that time, it was the tallest building in Ann Arbor! It held both the bank and many important local businesses. In 1936, the First National Bank joined with two other banks. They moved out of the building. The old bank offices were then changed into shops.
First Martin Corporation bought the building in 1981. This company completely updated the whole building in 1982. As of 2018, First Martin still owns and manages the building.
Design and Look of the Building
The First National Bank Building is ten floors tall. It also has smaller sections at the back that are two and five stories high. The building mixes two interesting styles: Art Deco and Art Moderne.
It has a strong steel frame inside. The main outer walls are covered in light-colored terra-cotta. This terra-cotta has a calm Romanesque style. The Northwestern Terra Cotta Company made the terra-cotta. It has wide vertical lines. You can also see cool gargoyles near the top, just below a fancy decorative edge.
