Flag of US Virgin Islands facts for kids
The flag of the United States Virgin Islands is a special symbol. It was officially chosen in 1921. This flag helps tell the story of these beautiful islands.
Look closely at the flag! You'll see a big eagle in the middle. This eagle holds a branch in one claw. In its other claw, it holds three arrows. These three arrows stand for the three main islands: Saint Thomas, Saint John, and Saint Croix.
The colors on the flag also have meanings. Yellow shows the sunny character of the islands and their pretty flowers. Green stands for the rolling hills. White represents the fluffy clouds in the sky. And blue shows the clear, beautiful waters around the islands.
How the Flag Was Designed
The idea for the Virgin Islands flag started with a man named Summer Ely Whitmore Kitelle. He was the governor of the islands in 1921. On April 26, 1921, Governor Kitelle wanted a unique flag for the Virgin Islands.
He asked two people for help with the design. These people were Mr. White and Percival Wilson Sparks. Mr. Sparks was a cartoonist, someone who draws cartoons.
Percival Sparks drew a design for the flag on paper. After he finished the drawing, he put the design onto strong cotton fabric. Then, he asked his wife, Grace, and her sister, Blanche Joseph, to help make the flag. They carefully created the flag based on his design.
