Fort Tremblante: A Key Fur Trading Post

This fort was in a great spot for finding animals with valuable fur. It produced many beaver and otter furs. These furs were very important for the company. Many furs likely came from a nearby forest. Today, this area is known as Duck Mountain Provincial Park (Saskatchewan).

Who Built and Lived at Fort Tremblante?

A man named Robert Grant started Fort Tremblante in 1791. From 1793 to 1798, Cuthbert Grant Sr. was in charge of the fort. His son, also named Cuthbert Grant, who became quite famous later, was born here in 1793.

Where Was Fort Tremblante Located?

The fort was located about 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) south-southeast of a town called Kamsack, Saskatchewan. It was also west of Togo, Saskatchewan. The fort was built about 500 steps east of the Assiniboine River. It was just above where the Rivière Tremblante (Trembling River) joins the Assiniboine from the east.

What Happened to the Fort?

Fort de la Rivière Tremblante closed down in 1798. Two years later, in 1800, it burned to the ground.

Exploring the Fort's Remains

Years later, in the summers of 1967 and 1968, an archaeologist named Hugh MacKie studied the fort. He was from the University of Saskatchewan. His work showed that the fort was built very strongly. It also looked like it was expanded and changed several times over the years it was in use.
