François Chérèque was an important French leader who worked to help people in their jobs. He was a trade unionist, which means he was part of a group that protects workers' rights. He led a big French trade union called the CFDT (which stands for Confédération française démocratique du travail).
He was born on June 1, 1956, and passed away on January 2, 2017.
His Younger Years
François Chérèque was born in a city called Nancy in France. His family had a history of helping workers. His father, Jacques Chérèque, was also a leader in the CFDT union.
François went to a school called Lycée Notre-Dame Saint-Sigisbert. He finished school there in 1975.
What He Did
François Chérèque started his career working in hospitals. He worked at a hospital in Puteaux near Paris. Later, he worked at another hospital in Digne-les-Bains, a city in the south-east of France.
He became the main leader, or secrétaire général, of the CFDT union in 2002. He took over from Nicole Notat. During his time as leader, he worked hard to make sure public sector workers received good pensions. Pensions are like savings that people get when they retire from their jobs.
François Chérèque led the CFDT until November 28, 2012. After him, Laurent Berger became the new leader.
After leaving the CFDT, François Chérèque also led a group called PS Terra Nova. This group was like a "think tank" that came up with new ideas. He was the president of this group from 2012 to 2016.
His Passing
Sadly, François Chérèque died on January 2, 2017. He passed away from a serious illness called leukemia.
