The GLAAD Media Award is a special award given by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). It celebrates different types of media, like movies, TV shows, and music. The award honors media that show lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in a great way. It also recognizes stories about issues that affect their lives.
Besides film and television, these awards also honor achievements in other areas. This includes theater, music, journalism, and even advertising.
How Winners Are Chosen
More than 700 people help choose the winners for the GLAAD Media Awards. These voters and volunteers look at four main things for each project:
- Fair and Accurate Stories: Does the project show LGBT people in a fair, accurate, and welcoming way?
- Bold and Original Ideas: Is the project brave and new?
- Big Cultural Impact: Does it have a big effect on what people think and talk about?
- Overall Quality: Is the project really well made?
After the votes are counted, a special group of experts reviews them. They use the voting results and their own knowledge to decide the final winners.
History of the Awards
The very first GLAAD Media Awards ceremony took place in 1990. It honored media from the year 1989. In that first year, 34 different projects were nominated. They competed in 7 different categories.
