Galindo Aznárez II facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Galindo Aznárez II was an important leader known as the Count of Aragon. He held this position from the year 893 until his death in 922. Galindo was the son of Aznar Galíndez II and his wife Onneca Garcés, who was the daughter of King García Íñiguez of Pamplona.

Life as Count of Aragon

Galindo became the Count of Aragon after his father passed away. In 905, he joined a group that helped bring about a big change in Pamplona. They supported his brother-in-law, Sancho I, to become the new king. This change removed the old ruling family and brought in a new one, the Jiménez dynasty, which was more friendly to Aragon.

However, Galindo later turned against King Sancho I. In 911, he attacked Sancho along with his other brother-in-law, Muhammad al-Tawil, and Abd Allah ibn Lubb al-Qasawi. This attack was not successful. Their group was defeated, and Muhammad al-Tawil was killed. After this, Galindo had to agree to become a vassal of King Sancho. This meant he had to promise loyalty and support to Sancho.

Galindo's Family

Galindo Aznárez II was married two times and had several children.

His first wife was Acibella. She was the daughter of Count García II Sánchez of Gascony. With Acibella, Galindo had three children:

  • Toda Galíndez: She married Bernat I, who was the Count of Ribagorza. Through her, the region of Sobrarbe became part of Ribagorza.
  • Redemptus Galíndez: He became a bishop, which is a high-ranking church leader.
  • Mirón Galíndez: He likely died before his father. Because of this, he did not become the Count of Aragon, even though he was a legitimate son.

Galindo's second wife was Sancha Garcés of Pamplona. She was the daughter of García Jiménez and Onneca Rebelle. Sancha was also the half-sister of King Sancho I. With Sancha, Galindo had two children:

  • Andregoto Galíndez: She inherited the county of Aragon after her father. She later became the queen of Pamplona by marrying her cousin, García Sanchez. He was the King of Pamplona from 925 to 970.
  • Velasquita Galíndez: She first married Íñigo López de Estigi y Ciligueta. She might also have been married to Count Fortún Jiménez of Aragon.

Galindo also had several other sons who were born outside of his marriages. Their names were Guntislo, Sancho, Belasco, Banzo (who had a son named Galindo), and Aznar.
