Gaspar Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán y Sandoval, 9th Duke of Medina Sidonia (1602–1664) was an important Spanish nobleman. He became the Duke of Medina Sidonia in 1636. This happened after his father, Juan Manuel Pérez de Guzmán, the 8th Duke, passed away.

Early Life and Family

Gaspar Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán y Sandoval was born in 1602. He grew up in a very powerful and noble family in Spain.

In 1622, when he was 20 years old, he married Ana María de Guzmán. She was 14 years old at the time. They had four children together. Sadly, only their youngest child, Gaspar Juan, lived long enough to become the next Duke.

The Andalusian Rebellion

A major event in the Duke's life happened in 1640. His sister, Luisa of Guzman, became the Queen of Portugal. She married the Duke of Braganza, who then became John IV of Portugal.

In 1641, the 9th Duke of Medina Sidonia led a rebellion in Andalusia. This was a region in southern Spain. The goal was to make Andalusia independent from Spanish rule.

  • Portugal and Catalonia, other regions, had strong reasons for independence.
  • Andalusia did not have the same history of independence or strong public support.
  • The Duke had help from his brother-in-law, John IV of Portugal.
  • However, promised help from France and the Netherlands did not arrive.

Because of these reasons, the rebellion failed. The King of Spain decided to forgive the Duke for his actions. However, his family's high standing and respect were only fully restored by his son, the next Duke.
