Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin (born May 28, 1955) is an expert from Ireland. He studies music, history, and culture, especially Irish music. He is also a writer and a musician. He focuses on how Irish music and culture have spread around the world.

Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin was born in Ennis, a town in County Clare, Ireland. He used to be a member of The Kilfenora Céilí Band. This is a famous traditional Irish music group.

He is a very talented musician. He has won the All Ireland Champion title five times! He plays the uilleann pipes, the concertina, and performs in a céili band. He learned to play the concertina from a master musician named Paddy Murphy.

Gearóid has played and recorded music with many well-known Irish fiddlers. These include Paddy Canny, Peadar O'Loughlin, and Martin Hayes. He has also played with Patrick Ourceau and Pierre Schryer.

His Education and Work

Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin went to several universities. He studied at University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. He also studied in Paris, France, at Université de la Sorbonne. Later, he earned a PhD in 1990. His PhD was in social anthropology and ethnomusicology from Queen's University Belfast. Ethnomusicology is the study of music from different cultures.

From 2000 to 2009, he was a special professor at the University of Missouri–St. Louis in the United States. He taught about Irish culture and music there.

Since 2009, he has held an important position at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is the first person to hold the Johnson Chair in Quebec and Canadian Irish Studies. This university is one of the few that offers special courses in Irish Studies. These courses teach about Ireland's history, culture, and how Irish immigrants have helped shape Canada.
