Gento (son of Genseric) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gento was an important person in the early days of the Vandal Kingdom in Africa. He was the fourth and youngest son of Genseric, who was the founder and first king of the Vandal Kingdom. Gento was also the father of two future Vandal kings, Gunthamund and Thrasamund. He died in battle in the year 477.

Gunthamund: A Popular King

Gunthamund was born around 450 AD and ruled as King of the Vandals and Alans from 484 to 496 AD. He was the third king of the Vandal Kingdom, which was located in North Africa.

Gunthamund became king after his uncle, Huneric, died. Huneric was not a very popular ruler, so Gunthamund's reign was seen as a positive change. This helped him have a successful time as king.

Gunthamund was the second son of Gento. Many members of Genseric's family had died, including Gunthamund's older brothers, who were sadly killed by Huneric. Because of this, Gunthamund became the oldest male in the family when Huneric passed away in 484. According to the laws set by his grandfather Genseric, the oldest male family member would become the next king. So, Gunthamund was chosen as king.

Thrasamund: A Long Reign

Thrasamund was born around 450 AD and ruled as King of the Vandals and Alans from 496 to 523 AD. He was the fourth king of the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa.

Thrasamund's reign was quite long, lasting longer than any other Vandal king in Africa except for his grandfather, Genseric. Thrasamund was the third son of Gento. He became king in 496 after all of Genseric's sons and his own brother, King Gunthamund, had died.
