Gracián Babán facts for kids
Gracián Babán (born around 1620 – died February 2, 1675) was a talented musician and composer from Valencia, Spain. He lived a long time ago, during a period when music was very important in churches and cathedrals.
Gracián Babán was the musical director at the Cathedral of Valencia from 1657 until his death in 1675. This was a very important job! It meant he was in charge of all the music played and sung in the cathedral. He would have directed choirs and musicians during church services and special events.
His Amazing Music
More than forty of Gracián Babán's musical pieces are still kept safe in Valencia today. These include:
- Masses: These are long musical works written for church services.
- Motets: These are shorter pieces of sacred music, often sung by a choir.
Many of his works were written for several choirs singing at the same time. This style is called polychoral music, and it creates a rich, full sound. Imagine different groups of singers performing together, sometimes echoing each other, sometimes blending their voices!
One of his famous pieces is a setting of Psalm 142 from the Bible, titled Voce mea ad Dominum (which means "With my voice I cry to the Lord"). This piece was so good that it was included in a famous collection of Spanish sacred music called Lira sacro-hispanaHilarión Eslava.
in 1869. This collection was put together by another important musician namedSee also
