The Grand Hotel is a historic building located in New York City. You can find it in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan, at the corner of Broadway and West 31st Street. This grand hotel was built in 1868. It was designed by an architect named Henry Engelbert in the Second Empire style. Engelbert created the hotel for Elias S. Higgins, who was a very successful carpet manufacturer.
A Look Back at the Area
When the Grand Hotel was first built, the area around Broadway was a very popular place. It was known as the city's main entertainment district. There were many theaters, restaurants, and other hotels. Over time, the neighborhood changed. It became known as the "Tenderloin" because of its lively and sometimes rough atmosphere. Later, the theater district moved to a different part of the city. This area then became part of the Garment District, which is known for clothing businesses. The Grand Hotel also changed, becoming a place where people could live for a longer time.
A Protected Landmark
The Grand Hotel is an important part of New York City's history. Because of its special design and past, it was named a New York City Landmark in 1979. A few years later, in 1983, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a significant historic building in the United States.
