Around the year 1650, a special apple was created in Green's End. This apple is called the Rhode Island Greening. It is even the official state fruit of Rhode Island! A local tavern owner named Mr. Green developed this apple. He ran a place called Green's Inn. Mr. Green would grow these apples and share parts of the trees (called grafts) with people passing by. The Rhode Island Greening apple became very popular. It was one of the most common apples grown in New York during the 1800s.

The Mystery of Green End Fort

There is an old fort in the area called Green End Fort. For a long time, people thought British soldiers built it. They believed it was made in 1777 during the American Revolution. This fort was thought to be part of their defenses around Newport. However, newer studies suggest something different. It is now believed that the French army built the fort in 1780. This was when the French were helping the Americans and occupied Newport. Green End Fort is special because it is one of the few remaining earthwork forts in Rhode Island. Earthwork forts are made mostly from dirt and natural materials.
