The Alpine flatwing (scientific name: Griseargiolestes intermedius) is a type of damselfly found only in Australia. It belongs to a family called Megapodagrionidae. These interesting insects are known for their unique way of resting with their wings spread out flat.

About the Alpine Flatwing

The Alpine flatwing is a medium-sized damselfly. It has a striking black-green metallic body with lighter markings. Adult flatwings often have a slightly frosty or powdery look, which is called pruinescence. This powdery coating can make them look a bit duller than younger damselflies.

Where They Live

Alpine flatwings are endemic to Australia. This means they are found naturally nowhere else in the world. They live specifically in the cool, high-altitude areas of Victoria and New South Wales. You can often spot them in wet places like bogs and areas where water seeps out of the ground. These damp environments are perfect for them to live and lay their eggs.

Similar Species

The Alpine flatwing looks quite a lot like another damselfly called Griseargiolestes griseus. However, Griseargiolestes griseus is usually found further north in New South Wales. Scientists use small differences in their features to tell them apart.
