About Guayakí
Guayakí started in 1996. It was part of a school project by Alex Pryor and David Karr. They were students at California Polytechnic State University.
Guayakí's Mission to Help
In 2018, Guayakí had an important goal. They wanted to help protect and bring back 200,000 acres of rainforest. This rainforest is called the Atlantic Forest. They also aimed to create over 1,000 good jobs by 2020. They do this through something called "Market Driven Restoration." This means they use their business to help the environment and local people. They believe that buying and selling products can actually help save nature.
The Name and Its Meaning
The name Guayakí comes from the Aché people. They are an Indigenous group from Paraguay. The Aché people have used the mate plant for a very long time. Guayakí works with the Aché people. They help protect the rainforest where the Aché live and where mate grows. The company also pays the Aché community for using their name. This shows their respect and support.
Certifications and Standards
Guayakí was the first company in California to become a B Corporation. This means they meet high standards for helping society and the environment. Their products are also certified organic by USDA Organic. This shows they grow their mate without harmful chemicals.
The company is also certified fair trade. This means they pay fair prices to farmers and workers. They are a member of the Fair Trade Federation. Guayakí was also the first yerba mate company to get "biodynamic" certification. This is a special way of farming that focuses on the health of the whole farm.
New Leadership
In April 2021, Guayakí announced a new leader. Stefan Kozak became the company's new CEO. He used to be the CEO of Red Bull North America.
