Guiscarda (or Guiscarde) was an important noblewoman who lived a long time ago, in the 1100s. She was known for being a powerful leader in a place called Béarn, which is now part of France. Guiscarda was the ruling Viscountess of Béarn in 1134. This means she was the main ruler of that area.

She also acted as a regent for many years. A regent is someone who rules a country or territory when the official ruler is too young or unable to do so. Guiscarda was a regent for her own son from 1134 to 1147, and later for her grandson from 1153 until she passed away in 1154.

Early Life and Family

Guiscarda was the oldest child of two important people: Gaston IV of Béarn and Talesa of Aragon. Her father, Gaston IV, was also a Viscount of Béarn, so she grew up in a family of rulers.

Becoming a Ruler

In 1134, Guiscarda's younger brother, Centule VI of Béarn, passed away. This meant that Guiscarda became the Viscountess of Béarn. However, she decided to let her son, Peter II of Béarn, take on the main title.

Guiscarda as Regent

Even though her son Peter II was the official Viscount, he was still very young. Because of this, Guiscarda took on the important role of regent. She helped rule Béarn and make decisions for her son until he was old enough to rule by himself. This period lasted until 1147.

At first, Guiscarda's own mother, Talesa of Aragon, also helped as a primary regent. Guiscarda was the secondary regent. But Guiscarda played a big part in governing Béarn during these years.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1147, her son Peter II became an adult. At this point, Guiscarda stepped back from her duties in government. She had successfully guided Béarn for many years.

However, Peter II passed away in 1153. His son, Gaston V of Béarn, was still a child. So, Guiscarda once again became a regent. She ruled for her grandson, Gaston V, until her own death the next year in 1154. Guiscarda was a strong and dedicated leader who helped guide Béarn through important times.
