A Career in Filmmaking
Héctor Olivera started his film career at just seventeen years old as an assistant director. By the time he was twenty-five, he had already started his own film production company, called Aries. A production company is a business that makes movies. Over his long career, Olivera helped produce more than 100 films.
Making Different Kinds of Movies
Olivera was known for making two main types of films. Some of his movies had very important messages about history and society. Two of his most well-known films are Night of the Pencils (1986) and Funny Dirty Little War (1983). These films explored serious topics from Argentina's history.
He also made movies that were more for entertainment, like action and adventure films. He worked with the American director Roger Corman on five movies, including Barbarian Queen (1985) and Wizards of the Lost Kingdom (1985).
Olivera once explained that making popular, fun movies helped his company earn money. This money then allowed him to make his more serious films with political messages. This smart plan helped his company, Aries, become one of the few Argentine film studios from that time that is still making movies today.
Judging at Film Festivals
Olivera was so respected in the movie world that he was invited to be a jury member at major film festivals. A jury at a film festival is a group of experts who watch new movies and decide which ones should win awards.
