What "Hùng Vương" Means
The name "Hùng Vương" comes from two old Vietnamese words. "Hùng" means strong, powerful, or grand. "Vương" means king. So, "Hùng Vương" means "powerful king." It was likely a special title given to a strong leader. These leaders were said to be the main chieftains of a place called Văn Lang. This land was made up of communities of rice farmers.
The Story of the Hùng Kings
According to old stories, there were eighteen Hùng kings. They ruled during the Hồng Bàng dynasty, which lasted for a very long time (from 2879 BC to 258 BC). Their kingdom was in parts of what is now northern Vietnam and southern China.
The stories say the first Hùng kings came from a special pair: Lạc Long Quân (a Dragon Lord) and Âu Cơ (a mountain goddess). They had a magical sac with one hundred eggs. From these eggs, one hundred sons were born!
Dragon Lord Lạc Long Quân loved the sea, and Goddess Âu Cơ loved the mountains. So, they decided to separate. Half of their sons went with their father to the sea. The other half went with their mother to the mountains.
One of their most famous sons became the first Hùng king. He ruled a kingdom called Văn Lang. This land was home to all the descendants of the Dragon Lord and the Goddess. These people are believed to be the ancestors of the Vietnamese people today. The capital city of Văn Lang was in what is now Phú Thọ Province.
