A Market with a Long History

Did you know the Halifax Farmers' Market is the oldest market of its kind in all of North America? It first opened way back in 1750! That's even before Canada was a country. For over 270 years, people in Halifax have been coming to this market to buy fresh produce and other goods.

Over the many years, the market has been held in different places around Halifax. One of its well-known past homes was the historic Keith's Brewery Building. It's amazing to think about all the history that has happened at this market!

The Big Move to the Seaport

In 2010, something big happened. Most of the people who ran the market, called "cooperative members," decided to move to a brand new building. This new home is part of the Halifax Seaport, which is a busy area by the water. When they moved, they changed their name to the 'Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market'.

A few vendors loved the old location so much that they decided to stay. They started their own market there, calling it the 'Historic Farmers Market'. So, now Halifax has two great farmers' markets! In October 2015, the Seaport market celebrated a huge milestone: 265 years of helping local businesses and feeding the community.

A Green and Modern Building

The building for the new Seaport Farmers' Market is really special. It was designed by a local architecture company called Lydon Lynch. This building is very eco-friendly and has a special "LEED Gold" certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It means the building was built to be good for the planet!

The market is inside a renovated warehouse. It has cool features that save energy and water. It even has a "green roof" that you can visit! This rooftop garden is open to everyone and is a great place to relax and enjoy the views. It shows how the market is not just about food, but also about being kind to the Earth.
