Hugh VI, Viscount of Châteaudun facts for kids
Hugues VI (pronounced "Hyoo the Sixth") was an important leader from the Middle Ages. He was known as the Clever (Callidus in Latin). Hugues was a Viscount of Châteaudun, which meant he was a powerful noble who managed a specific area called Châteaudun. He was the son of Hugues IV and Marguerite de Saint-Calais.
Becoming a Viscount
Hugues VI likely became the Viscount of Châteaudun around the year 1176. He took over this role after his brother, Geoffrey IV. Not much is known about Hugues's early life. We do know that in 1175, he sold some forest land near Romilly-sur-Aigre and Chauvigny. This land was sold to a group of people from Marmoutier.
Joining the Crusades
One of the most important events in Hugues VI's life was joining the Third Crusade. The Crusades were a series of big religious wars during the Middle Ages. Many European knights and nobles traveled to the Middle East to fight. Hugues arrived in June 1191 with a group of soldiers from the Anjou region of France. Sadly, he died during the siege of Acre in 1191. This was a long and difficult battle.
Family Life
Hugues VI was married to a woman named Jeanne de Preuilly. Her father was Gosbert de Preuilly. Hugues and Jeanne had two children together:
- Geoffrey V, Viscount of Châteaudun
- Agnes (who lived until at least February 1200)
After Hugues VI died, his son Geoffrey became the new Viscount of Châteaudun.
