Humid continental climate facts for kids

A humid continental climate is a type of weather region. It was first described by a scientist named Wladimir Köppen in 1900. Places with this climate have big changes in temperature between seasons. Summers are warm or hot and often humid. Winters are cold, sometimes very cold, especially in northern areas. It usually rains or snows throughout the year.
For a place to have a humid continental climate, the average temperature in its coldest month must be below −3 °C (26.6 °F) (or 0 °C (32.0 °F)). Also, at least four months must have an average temperature of 10 °C (50 °F) or higher.
You usually find these climates between 40° N and 60° N latitude. They are common in the central and northeastern parts of North America, Europe, and Asia.
