I Don't Want to Go to Bed is a fun children's book. It was written by the famous Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The book's original title in Swedish is Jag vill inte gå och lägga mig!.

What Happens in the Story?

This story is about a boy named Lasse. Lasse really doesn't want to go to bed. He always finds new and exciting things to play with. His mom is a bit stuck and doesn't know what to do.

Then, Lasse's Aunt Lotte has a clever idea. She lets Lasse try on her special magic glasses. With these glasses, Lasse can see what other young ones are doing.

Lasse sees a baby bear. The little bear is sitting in bed after a long day. He has been eating his honey porridge in the forest. Lasse also sees some rabbit children. They are going to bed after a fun pillow fight. Five tiny bird children are sleeping soundly on tree branches. They spent the afternoon practicing how to fly. Three squirrel children are playing with a toy train. They eat some candy, then it's time for bed.

Meanwhile, a mouse child named Kasper comes home late. He was playing outside in the yard. His mom tells him to eat dinner quickly. Then he needs to go to bed. All his brothers and sisters are already asleep.

After Lasse takes off the magic glasses, Aunt Lotte explains something important. She tells him that all children, even animal children, need to sleep at night. So, Lasse should go to bed too. Lasse goes home and quietly gets into his own bed. When his mom comes to tuck him in, he is already fast asleep!

About the Book's History

The book Jag vill inte gå och lägga mig! was first released in Sweden. This happened in the year 1947. The very first edition had pictures drawn by Brigitta Nordenskjöld.

Later, in 1988, a new version of the book came out. This reprint featured new illustrations by Ilon Wikland. Interestingly, Wikland drew Aunt Lotte to look like Astrid Lindgren herself!
