Description: Heraldic architectural sculpture group in the west gable a of Turnverein gymnasium building in Indianapolis — by sculptor Rudolph Schwarz. A cartouche in the center contains an oval relief portrait of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the "Turnvater" or father of the gymnasium movement. Jahn has a high brow, long hair and beard. Two figures (male and female) flank the cartouche. The surrounding male figure's proper right arm is extended and holds what appears to be a flaming torch (now badly eroded.) The female is now headless. Spaces between the figures and the cartouche are infilled with festoons and scrolls. Save Outdoor Sculpture, Indiana survey, 1993 image.
